Quick Guide: How To Make Compliant and Professional E-Juice Labels
Custom printed e-juice labels are the ideal way to raise brand awareness in the rapidly expanding e-juice industry. Branding is essential at all levels, but even more when the product you’re selling needs a bit of help to stand out. New brands and flavors appear on the market every day. Moreover, vape fans are now pickier than ever when it comes to the e-juice they buy. They are looking for the ultimate taste and experience. Therefore, professionally printed e-juice labels can make it easy for customers to imagine how using your product tastes like.
If your customized e-juice labels tell the story of the flavor inside, your vape brand will not only look high quality, but it will gain reliability and ultimately boost your orders.

Exponential Rise In Use Of E-Cigarettes
The use of e-cigarettes has been on constant rise over the past decade. “In 2018, current (30 days) e-cigarette use was about 20% in American high school students and about 3% in adults.”
2020 registered 68 million vape users worldwide, with China having the most e-cigarette users, followed by the US and Europe.
The increase in e-cigarette use emerged particularly among young people due to heavy advertising and low cost compared to tobacco.
Plus, youngsters feel so cool puffing from those stylish pens and mods, and they can’t resist the appealing flavors.
E-Juice, E-Liquid, or Vape Juice?
If we look at the products on the market, we’ll find e-juice, e-liquid, or vape juice written on the packaging. Is there a difference? No. They’re all the same thing but named differently. These terms are used interchangeably, so you can choose which one you’d like to appear on your labels.
The liquid used in e-cigarettes for vaping usually contains various ingredients such as nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, water, and artificial flavorings.
Some liquids contain only some of these ingredients, and some are nicotine-free.
Is it important what an e-juice contains? Yes. And we’ll see why further on. Keep reading.
FDA Has A Say About Tobacco Products and E-Juice Labels
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates tobacco-related products and prohibits their sale to individuals under 18.
To prevent minors from trying or attaining these smokeless products, companies will no longer sell in vending machines or provide free samples. Any company that fails to do so and is caught will face costly penalties.
FDA considers e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) - by their formal definition - a tobacco product, along with their components and parts. And e-liquids are such components or parts, meaning FDA regulates your product.
Specifically, it “regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS [...].”
So whether you’re a manufacturer or a retailer, before planning your marketing campaign or getting down to the design of your e-juice labels, you should pay great attention to the precise labeling requirements set in the Final Rule by the FDA.
These requirements are becoming more and more similar to those established for cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco.
And as I was mentioning above, it matters what ingredients your e-juice contains. Based on this, mainly if it contains nicotine or not, there are two labeling options.
Here’s a summary of the main points to help you guide your steps when designing your labels.
1. Your e-juice CONTAINS NICOTINE
In 2018, the FDA decided that all products containing nicotine should bear the following warning statement:
“WARNING: This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.”Therefore, make sure to:
- Display it on 30% of the two principal display panels, centered and having the same orientation as the other information displayed
- Print the statement in at least 12-point size to be conspicuous and legible
- Use Helvetica bold, Arial bold, or other similar sans serif “in black text on a white background or white text on a black background in a manner that contrasts by typography, layout, or color, with all other printed material on the package.”
- Keep the exact capitalization and punctuation shown in the blue box above.
Moreover, if the container of your product is too small to accommodate a label with sufficient space - let’s say a 5 ml bottle - then the warning statement must appear on one of the following:
- Carton
- Outer container
- Wrapper
- Tag permanently affixed on the package
On the other hand...
2. Your e-juice does NOT CONTAIN NICOTINE
If your e-juice does not contain nicotine, you’re exempt from adding this warning to your labels.
And you don’t have to submit a self-certification for the use of the alternative statement (“This product is made from Tobacco”) required only for products that contain tobacco.
So you’re good to go.
But wait...
Other statements on your e-juice labels
Here’s what to check and include in your graphics before submitting your artwork:
- Name and place of the business of the tobacco product manufacturer, packer, or distributor
- Accurate statement of the quantity of the contents in terms of weight, measure, or numerical count (e.g., 3 mg/100 ml)
- “Sale only allowed in the United States” - your label, packaging, and shipping containers must bear this statement.

Avoid child-friendly e-juice labels design
Companies are not allowed to market and sell e-juice products to people under 18 years old. Also, selling them in vending machines or giving them away as samples is forbidden.
Children’s health is put at high-risk as they might be misled by the colorful fruit, candy, or food imitating images on the e-juice labels, thinking it’s okay to drink or swallow the toxic liquid inside.
The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act states that “labeling and/or advertising imitating kid-friendly foods is misleading.”
So, a word of caution:
Avoid cartoon-like graphics on your e-juice labels, which might be appealing to children and lead to situations that might endanger their health.
By doing this, you’re also avoiding misbranding. Compliance doesn’t only keep you safe, but it’s also a guarantee that your sales don’t get disrupted.
This being said, follow the latest mandatory requirements, but don't compromise on creativity.
Tips To Keep In Mind When Designing Your E-Juice Labels
Farewell cigarettes, welcome vapes. Vapes are a craze among millennials, former cigarette smokers, CBD fans, and all those looking for flavored puffing experiences.
What’s useful to keep in mind when designing your labels?
Read the tips below.
#1 Think about your audience
One thing we set clear: vapes and e-juices are not intended for children use.
Oh, but the market is still an ocean of opportunities. And while it’s essential to know where and to whom you sell your products, it’s also smart to think about how your brand will be perceived in the long-run. Because you’re planning to stay and grow on the market, right?
As vaping is mainly a youth thing, consider that your audience's age ranges between 18 and 44. And the primary users are people under 25, as CDC's data suggests.
This tip should help you make an idea about who's going to buy your super juices, and what attracts them.
So, when you’re choosing your packaging design, think in terms of the whole product branding and the impact it will make on your audience.
#2 Brand consistency
First, customers have no idea about your product’s quality and how much they’ll love it until they’ve tried it. And to make them try it, your custom e liquid boxes and e-juice labels must be alluring enough.
They must represent your brand and personality and send the right come-get-me message.
But remember: keep the design and message about your products cohesive. The message must be aligned with your core brand values.
Also, the visual elements, the logo, and colors, must ensure your brand is easily recognizable anywhere.
And even more, match your e-juice labels with your e-juice boxes for a complete branding experience.
Choose colors wisely. Make them match your flavor, and decide what’s the most important thing you want your customers to know about your brand and products.
Your label is your best salesperson. So make sure it’s doing the best job possible.
With so many fancy designs, irresistible flavors, and colorful names of e-juice products out there, choosing your label is critical to overall branding consistency and marketing success.
Moving forward.
#3 Measure your bottle size for perfectly-fitting e-juice labels
One aspect that you should not disregard if you want visually appealing e-liquid labels is size.
The size of your e-juice dropper bottles, squeeze bottles, or special-shaped containers will determine your e-juice labels’ correct size.
E-liquids come in bottles of standard sizes, such as 5 ml, 10 ml, 15 ml, and 30 ml. So, usually multiples of five.
Whichever is your container’s size, you must accurately measure your bottle, so the label properly fits your bottles.
Here’s how to measure your bottle:
Option 1
Measure the bottom of your bottle with a flat ruler, then multiply the diameter by pi (3.14). The result is your maximum label width (or bottle circumference).
You have the flexibility to choose whether your label wraps entirely around the bottle or if you leave a gap between the edges. You will then need to select a height that looks good and fits your container.
Option 2
For wrap-around labels, you can use a piece of paper and wrap it around the bottle. Mark the areas where the ends of the paper touch each other. When you unwrap the paper, the mark will show you the maximum width of your label. You can also use a measuring tape.
If you don’t want your packaging label to wrap around the bottle, measure the front or main panel where you want the label to be. You can play with different sizes and shapes until you find the ones that will best represent your product.
#4 Choose high-quality materials
What you print your e-juice label graphics on matters. Your e-juice contains water and glycerine, among other ingredients. So, if spilled, you’d want to make sure that your waterproof and oilproof labels remain intact and don’t come off.
